Fish tank gravel cleaners are designed to remove detritus like old food and fish waste from the gravel or sand in your aquarium. To thoroughly clean your gravel or other aquarium substrate, place an empty bucket next to the tank, preferably at a lower level if you are using a siphon pump cleaner. Submerge the nozzle of the vac into the aquarium water and squeeze the siphon ball until siphoning begins. For automatic gravel cleaners, they often don't need a hose attachment. Don't suck up too much substrate at one time, and be sure to watch out for small fish and invertebrates. Be gentle around live plants and corals to avoid displacing them. Because you disturb the substrate when cleaning it, fine particles may be stirred up, making your aquarium water cloudy. Doing a partial water change of around 20% after siphoning or vacuuming the gravel can help clear the water.
